NFL Legend Wallace "Wally" Triplett

APPRECIATION
OF WALLY TRIPLETT
He said it was “Luck of Life.” I say it is “Life of Luck” ducking the drama, challenges and segregation while making a touchdown. Wallace Triplett, also known as Wally, is the first black man drafted by and played for the NFL. Today he is known to be an 85 year old ordinary man walking up the streets of Michigan. When I asked a few young football fanatics “Who is Wallace Triplett”? I received a “scratch on the head” – “I think I heard of the name” - and “I’ll have to look it up in the Internet.”

Wally Triplett is an active and modest man born in Historic La Mott Pennsylvania, a Village where the Black Troopers were trained for Civil War. Historic La Mott? Yes! Just as “Who is Wally Triplett”? History is so valuable and we should want to learn the true happenings from those of experience. Just for being a NEGRO, his scholarship was snatched away and football games were cancelled. Yet! He was a great football player with fame.

A NEGRO that took the field in a varsity football game for Penn State, played first in the Cotton Bowl Classic, co-founded the Penn State Gamma Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, played for The Detroit Lions, first Black NFL player drafted into military service for the Korean War and also traded to the Chicago Cardinals.

So what that Wally Triplett holds the Lions' single-game record in kickoff return yardage with 294, a 97-yard touchdown return against the Los Angeles Rams, has an NFL record of having an average of 73.5 yards per return in the game, Lions’ record for the longest run from scrimmage with an 80-yard touchdown against the Green Bay Packers. So what Wally Triplett is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame! Is there more?

The Triplett family has History but not only about football. Wally Triplett is 6 inches taller than me but you can see him pass by you if you really wanted to. But who am I? I am a Latin friend wondering why the History of Wally Triplett and Historic La Mott are still unborn even at the age of 85. A Latin friend wondering why there are no courtesy invitations and comfortable seating for Wally Triplett and his beautiful wife, Lenore, of 60 years of marriage during the finals, playoffs and conventions. Which direction are we guiding our learners? What is wrong with real history?

Wally Triplett now recognizes himself and shouts out “I AM NFL” . . . “Negro Finally Listed.” I say “Negro Finishes Last” and paid with Pennies.

Now let’s talk about Joe Paterno. No! We heard enough about him!
